I put Ty & Tink's plate in front of them for lunch today and exclaimed, "Wow, this is a healthy lunch today!" Let's be honest here. I was really kind of patting myself on the back, because somedays it's just mac and cheese or just a quesadilla.
So Ty asked what made the grapes or the spinach salad good for you and I explained on each one. Then he asked about the chicken on his roll and I started telling him about how meat gives us protein, and started talking about how we eat all kinds of animals. Cows, chickens, pigs and lambs, etc.
He dropped his sandwich on the plate almost as quickly as his jaw, and looked up with big saucer eyeballs. "You mean, I eat pigs?!? But they're SO cute!" I walked over to the rotisserie chicken that I'd taken a slab of breast meat off of for the sandwich and showed him how the body parts were like ours. Wow--the lights were turning on and Ty was getting more and more horrified with each realization. "You mean we kill things all the time and eat them?!?!? Oh--I am NEVER eating meat again! I'm only eating plants!"
So, we made a deal to try it out for a week. Casey is going to DIE when he hears this, because he & Ash are serious carnivores. You'd better believe I devoured some more of that chicken breast for the rest of that lunch, because I think I'll miss it a little too. But hey--why not give it a go. Bring on the tofu, the rice and beans, the lentil soup! Bring on Boca burgers and tofurkey!
Next, I think I'll show Ty a video on how hot dogs are made. You want a horror flick, this is in a class all it's own....

So funny! Our family actually switched to mostly meatless last year (we only eat it very rarely) for a variety of reasons (health, environment, cost). It's been hard to explain meat to the kids, especially since we don't eat much in our home. The other day we were at IHOP when this lady next to us asked us if we or our kids would want her extra bacon: S-Boogie piped up "We don't eat meat 'cause we don't want to kill too many pigs!" She's been on a 'killing pigs' kick since she saw Babe. Which I think is funny because I'm not really big animal rights person and I don't have a problem with using animals for meat neccesarily.
Next time we eat together, i'm going to eat meat and make the noises of the animals....just saying. hahaha What a guy that Tyler Ray, so sweet and innocent. love that boy
Ty can join Owen's club! :)
Way to go Tyler!! I was a vegetarian until I meet Brent and had a piece of his moms home cooked chicken. Certainly glad I can't stand Hot Dogs.
OH MY HANNAH! That is the funniest thing I've heard in a good while. :) Thanks for sharing. I can't wait to hear how the week long experiment goes. Oh how I love that Ty-ty.
OH wow, that How it's Made for hot dogs is SO awesome! I never did like hot dogs, and NOW I know why! PUREE! YUCK! I'm with Ty- at least for the hot dogs! Everything else, you're on your own buddy! Rachel always used to say when my mom put any meat on the table..."What kind of animal is THIS!!"
Right now, that rumbling in Utah that registered 6 on the Richter scale, was Grandma Trish-Carnivore-rolling over. We named each and every one of the steers that Grandpa put in with the cows so it could get extra grain for a month or two before he took it to the butcher. We'd pet it and handfeed it and treat it special. And then lick our chops when we were served it as sirloin steaks and roast. I like vegetables, too, and "eat a very little meat", but...I'm just saying...
Good luck with that one! THat sounds miserable to me.

Good luck Katie! My kids have also jumped on the vegetarian bandwagon, but only because they are picky...Chocolate Silk Soymilk is our favorite treat!
Tyler is so hilarious and so darn brilliant for his age--seriously! We love him to bits! I've never tried vegetarianism but for the most part we only eat animals with 2 legs :) That would be poultry I guess. We love ground turkey around here! (You are so brave to explain the whole animals=meat thing to him. I would tend to say... lets have that conversation after dinner ok? So cowardly!) We love the Owens no matter what you eat!
What aute kid...I am so laughing. And I love it. I will go vegetarian with him too. I have done it before....good luck to you both. Eat lots of bean burritos and lettuce.
A kid after my own heart! I haven't had the whole "we're eating that cute farm animal" talk yet with Anna. It still kinda grosses me out too...
Oh, and watching that video of hot dogs reminds me why I do not eat them. I cannot look at the things without thinking that there has to be lips and a-holes in them (sorry - remember that from "The Great Outdoors?")
** Interesting side note: I clicked on the "How Condoms Were Made" after watching that whole hot dog thing. Very interesting. Just thought I'd say... :)
That's so funny! Best of luck to the Ty-Guy!
